British RX racers head to Portugal for Euro RX round one
Two MSA British Rallycross Championship in association with ODYSSEY Battery teams will field three drivers in the opening round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship for Super1600 next weekend in Portugal.
Reigning British Rallycross Super1600 Champion Craig Lomax will make his European Rallycross debut driving the Xtreme Rallycross Citroen C2 with which he won the British title last season, while Michael Boak and current British RX Super1600 championship leader Phil Chicken will race their regular MB Motorsport Citroen C2s. “If the car goes as well as it did at Lydden, we should be all good and mixing it with some of the big names,” said Lomax. “It would be absolutely perfect if we can score some points from the round and not be last. I’m a little nervous because it’s a totally new ball game for us, we’re moving up a level.”
33 cars have entered the event in the Super1600 category, including Lithuanian Kasparas Navickas, Norwegian Magnus Bergsjobrenden, Russian Timur Shigaboutdinov, Dane Ulrik Linnemann and Latvian Artis Baumanis, who all competed at the second round of British RX at Lydden Hill last month. “With a large entry we will have a tough time against the best Europe has to offer, but I believe we’re in a position to be competitive,” said Boak. “We showed good pace in Belgium in the European Championship event last season and have worked hard since to improve and develop the car.”
Former British Rallycross Championship event winner, Liam Doran, who also competed at the Lydden Hill event, will make his debut for the JRM Racing team in Portugal, as he has switched from his Citroen DS3 to a Mini RX for this season.
