Two Kent-based drivers will make their first appearances of the season when the MSA British Rallycross Championship in association with ODYSSEY Battery has its second round at Lydden Hill Race Circuit next weekend. Rob Maynard and Don Macleod, who both live in Deal, will face each other and 15 others in the Swift Sport Rallycross Championship – one of eight supporting series on the programme at Lydden. 

Maynard is no stranger to the discipline having raced a Swift full-time in recent seasons, while Macleod will make his rallycross debut. Initially planned as one-off appearance, the Scottish driver may compete in further events later in the season.

Born on the Isle of Lewis, Macleod has been involved in motorsport throughout his life and for the last 25 years he has contributed to BBC Radio Highland’s Gaelic language Formula 1 coverage. “Whilst Lydden is technically a one-off event, I am 100% confident that if I can be competitive enough, I will look to enter at least one other event in 2016. Looking forward I would like to progress to a full assault on the championship in the future,” said the 49-year old, who works as a Border Force Officer at Dover Port. “For this event, one of my main aims is to have details on my vehicle that will benefit charities I am interested in; Help for Heroes and Demelza Hospice Care for Children.”

Macloed has been supported in his endeavours to compete in rallycross by local man Maynard. “Rob's commitment to the sport and his positive reaction to my enquiry gave me the impetus to pursue the idea. I bought myself a tester session from Peter Gwynne Motorsport at Lydden Hill in January and from there, with the help of Sarah (Watson) and Peter (Gwynne), I have arrived where we are today.”

Maynard will make his first of two 2016 appearances at the event, before he returns to the series full-time in 2017. The Deal driver finished on the podium at his home circuit 12 months ago and ended the season fourth overall.
