5 Nations BRX set for Fireworks title-deciding finale at Lydden Hill
Back where it all started on Easter Bank Holiday weekend, the 2024 Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy season culminates at Lydden Hill this weekend (November 2-3) for the Kent circuit’s annual Fireworks Extravaganza event.
For the first time ever, the finals on both Saturday and Sunday will be run under the cover of darkness, while Saturday evening will host the heralded fireworks extravaganza.
There will be fireworks too on the rallycross circuit throughout the weekend, with action aplenty, as drivers and teams battle for points to finish their seasons on a high.
In the headline Supercar category, ever driver entered is capable of finishing on at least the podium, while Oliver Bennett (BMW Mini), Tristan Ovenden (Citroen DS3), Julian Godfrey (Citroen DS3), Steve Hill (Mitsubishi Evo) and John McCluskey (Ford Fiesta) are all former event winners. Ian Barratt (Volkswagen Polo) had his strongest event so far in his maiden season last time out at Pembrey, while Colin Anson (Mitsubishi Mirage), Steve Harris (BMW Mini), Gary Donoghue (Ford Fiesta) and Mike Sellar (Volkswagen Polo) are chasing their first rostrum appearances of the campaign. In the points, while Patrick O’Donovan has already wrapped up the 2024 title, the battle to finish in the top three will be fierce throughout the weekend.
Belgian racer Dave Van Beers (Renault Clio) returns to the Motorsport UK Supernational Rallycross Championship series for the Lydden finale, joined by a maiden outing for Irishman Peter McGarry in a recently-acquired Volkswagen Polo. Jason Bleasdale leads the standings overall and in the rear-wheel-drive sub-category with his Vauxhall VX220, while Ford Fiesta campaigner Fred Ling heads the front-wheel-drive division.
Reigning title-winner Tyler McAlpin tops the Motorsport UK Junior Rallycross Championship order for single-make 1300cc Suzuki Swifts, while Benjamin Bartlett has claimed victories this season in the closely-fought category and sits closest to McAlpin in the points, with Teddie MacPherson currently third. Amaan Ganatra makes a return to the series this weekend.
Former Junior RX title-contender Will Ovenden is top of the Swift Sport Rallycross Championship table and appears on course to secure the crown at his home circuit, while new 2024 Swift Sport winner Andrew Sage returns for the finale, as do Naftali Ayieko, Matt Cake and Hannah Stewart.
In the BMW Mini Rallycross Championship things are super-close in the standings, with Wesley Wickens and Abbie McGuinness tied on points at the head of the table, Wickens currently ahead on wins count-back, while Leigh-Anne Sedgwick is just six points further back, as Michael Amlin and Warren Salter join the single-make grid.
Retro Rallycross newcomer Charlie French heads the Super Retro Rallycross Championship standings, 14 points ahead of four-time British Rallycross Champion Pat Doran, while a third Ford Escort campaigner, Allan Tapscott is currently ahead in an intense multi-driver battle to finish in the overall top three, as part of a packed entry in the division.
Dan Swayland (Ford Escort) leads the Retro Rallycross Championship points for cars up to 1600cc, having claimed his first victory of the season last time out at Pembrey. Reigning champion Tony Lynch (Toyota MR2) sits second thanks to four wins from five rounds. The class has received a boost for the final round of the campaign, with the return of Terry Moore (Mini) and a maiden start for Brad Venning (Peugeot 205).
Stephen Jones secured his third single-make buggy RX150 Rallycross Championship title at Pembrey and is joined by Ben Hardy and Nick Priddy for the final round, for 2024 the class racing on track together with the new Cross Car Rallycross Championship, in which it will be Max Weatherly and James Constantine in the hunt for honours.
