Anson returns to Supercar with title-winning Opel Astra
Former Supercar racer Colin Anson will make his return to the Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy this year with the Opel Astra driven by Irishman Christopher Evans to claim the 2006 title.
Anson’s rallycross career began over 30 years ago, and within that time he has raced Minis, Saabs and a Ford Escort Cosworth. However, he is best known for campaigning a self-developed Ford KA in the headline, fan-favourite Supercar category, from 2011 to 2016.
Having sold the four-wheel-drive, turbo-charged KA to focus on building a house among other commitments, Anson has now purchased the former Steiar Joranli Opel Astra to return to rallycross’ top level in the UK, and is planning to race in as many events as possible in 2022.
The car was fully rebuilt by Tony Bardy Motorsport prior to Christopher Evans claiming his British crown, and has subsequently been raced in events by Bardy, Geoffrey Dolan and Roger Thomas, but 2022 will mark its concerted return to competition. It is currently undergoing work, including the implementation of a new livery.
“It’s a really nice car. I’m doing a lot of work on it to be ready for the start of the season. It was very cleverly designed, Tony [Bardy] did a lot of work on it too when it came to the UK and it’s got the potential to do okay I think,” said Anson. “I’m fully signed up to 5 Nations BRX and how much we do will just depend a little bit what breaks on the car, because a lot of it is quite unique. If we can get it reliable, I want to do as much of the British Championship as possible, starting with the first rounds at Lydden Hill and see how it goes. I’m doing it to have fun, in a special car. You have to put your heart and soul into this and I’m really excited to be coming back to Supercar.”
The British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy will get underway at Lydden Hill for a double-header weekend on April 16-18. See full calendar below.
