British RX 2016 celebrated at Night of Champions
The MSA British Rallycross Championship in association with ODYSSEY Battery celebrated the 2016 season with its annual Night of Champions event on Saturday in Coventry.
The awards were held on the precise date of the 50th anniversary of the first event rallycross event, held of February 4 1967 at Lydden Hill.
The top three from every category that forms the British RX structure were awarded their hard-earned trophies at the ceremony, headlined by the youngest ever MSA British Rallycross Champion, Dan Rooke, who got his hands on the biggest prize in British Rallycross.
A number of special awards were also presented to members of the British RX paddock. Hot Hatch racer Graham Rumsey was awarded as the ‘Best Newcomer’ of 2016, the ‘Best Promoted Team’ trophy went the way of Supercar racer Mad Mark Watson and the ‘Maximum Attack’ accolade went to Vince Bristow for his sideways antics in the BMW 3-seires he races in the Supernational and Retro Rallycross categories.
The BMW Mini squad Hawkes Fire claimed the ‘Best Turned Out Team’ award, while the Sharratt Family, who travel to every British RX from their home in South Wales to marshal won the ‘Official of the Year’ prize. ‘Outstanding Performance’ went to RX150 Champion Chrissy Palmer for his unbeaten run in 2016, while Supernational race winner Guy Corner won ‘Driver of the Year’. The ‘LHMC Special Award’ was presented to British RX Champion Dan Rooke, for his incredible season in 2016 winning the British RX title in his first year in Supercar.
Alongside the British RX Night of Champions, RallycrossWorld.com inducted the first rallycross legends into its new Hall of Fame, where Robert Reed, Jeff Williamson, Roy Edwards, Rod Chapman, Stan Clark, John Taylor, John Welch, Will Gollop and Mick Bird joined host Andrew Coley and British RX Manager Tim Whittington on stage to celebrate the sport’s rich history.
