Cunningham set for British RX return at Croft with VX220
Former rallycross driver Joe Cunningham will return to the MSA British Rallycross Championship for the final round next week at Croft Circuit, driving a Supernational specification Vauxhall VX220, and will also compete in the MSA British Rallycross Grand Prix which takes place the following day.
Cunningham will campaign the VX220 that was raced last season by Gary Dixon, in what will be only his second ever rear-wheel drive experience. In recent seasons, Cunningham has focused on rallying in a Vauxhall Corsa, and won his class in the Motorsport News MSVR Circuit Rally Championship this year. “I have no expectations of what I can achieve at Croft. The car is relatively unproven and the rest of the lads and lasses in the class have been racing all year. I’ll start getting my excuses in early I think,” said Cunningham. “I had a go in a Lotus at Lydden Hill once when I was 16 and my Junior Mini broke its gearbox, but I’ve never sat in anything rear-wheel drive since!”
The former Junior and Hot Hatch driver's rallycross return has been backed by Supercar racer, Kevin Procter. “Procters Coaches has kindly given me the opportunity to race the car at Croft,” said Cunningham. “I’ve always loved rallycross since my days of doing the Junior championship and it would be great to do some more events alongside my rallying. Croft is certainly my favourite rallycross circuit, and it’s great to race so close to my home.”
The Bedale-based driver will be the third man to pilot a VX220 in British RX. Former champion Mike Turpin campaigned a Supercharged version of the car before moving to hillclimbing, while Supernational stalwart Dixon debuted the car that Cunningham will race next week at Croft last year.
