Flitney commits to full 5 Nations BRX campaign with fan-favourite Volvo Supercar
Supercar racer Dom Flitney has announced a full-season programme in the Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy with his unique Volvo C30.
Flitney made his maiden appearance in the fan favourite ex-Frode Holte European Championship event-winning C30 in the final rounds of 5 Nations BRX at Lydden Hill last year, stepping up from more production-based machinery. He impressed with his pace, finishing ninth and tenth in the two rounds.
Having begun his rallycross career in the Swift Sport Rallycross Championship in 2018 and subsequently graduated to Supercar with a Flitspeed-developed Subaru Impreza, now with the C30 at his disposal Flitney now has aspirations of challenging at the highest level in the series, starting at the opening double-header of the campaign at Lydden Hill next month (April 16 – 18).
“I’ve never looked forward to going racing as much as I am now. I want to develop myself this year, it’s been quite a big step over the last few years from where I started. I’m where I want to be now, so I’m working to be as competitive as possible, but to get some consistency too,” said Flitney, who will race in England, Wales (Pembrey), Ireland (Mondello Park) and elsewhere (TBC) within 5 Nations BRX in 2022.
“I loved every minute of running the car for the first time at Lydden last year, a lot of it was relief because it’s such a big deal to get to that level, but the car ran fine all weekend – it was brilliant. We were not pushing it at all, so I left Lydden feeling like there’s a lot more pace in me and the car, which is a really, really nice feeling. I like the fact it’s a different car on the grid and I’m planning to do a full season in Supercar this year. Like I said, I want to find some consistency in myself and the car, because consistency wins championships. For now it’s about making the finals, trying to finish in the top five and see where we go from there, but this is rallycross and you never know what’s going to happen. If we can fight for some podiums, that would be really nice.”
The British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy will get underway at Lydden Hill for a double-header weekend on April 16-18. See calendar below.
