Knockhill Race Circuit next on the horizon for British Rallycross
KY12 9TF is a postcode that most people will need next weekend as the 2014 MSA British Rallycross Championship in association with the Shannon Group heads to Scotland and the Knockhill circuit for Round Three of this years series.
The picturesque circuit outside Dunfermline, offers a unique challenge to Drivers, with the undulating nature on offer, along with the famous Scottish mist that can embrace the circuit at any time, but it remains a firm favourite with crews and teams each year they arrive on the Saturday.
This year will see Julian Godfrey head north as the Championship leader in the MSA Supercar class in association with ODYSSEY® battery, but is joined by Ollie O’Donovan who has recently purchased Kevin Procter’s Ford Focus, and the former British Champion will join Godfrey as one of the favourites for the win. In contention too, will be Steve Hill in the Mitsubishi, who has cured the Power Steering issues that he recently suffered from, while Steve Harris is out in the Ford Focus and they are joined by Simon Horton in the Subaru Impreza, currently in third overall following his third in Holland a few weeks ago.
The MSA Supernational’s will see the Peugeot of Stuart Emery as the man to beat following two perfect scores already. He leads Michael Boak in the Audi by sixteen points such is the dominance of the Kent man on the opening two rounds. Vince Bristow will make the trip north in the BMW, and will be joined by Alan Tapscott in the Vauxhall Corsa, Dave Ewin in the Fiesta and Steve Rattue in the MG ZR. Dark horse here could well be Malcolm Boyd who drove very well at Knockhill last year, with the Toyota MR2, seemingly well suited to the wet conditions, but with the likes of Slawomir Woloch in the Ford Fiesta, and Martin Hawkes in the Peugeot 206, not to mention Guy Corner in the 206, also on the entry list there is certainly going to be a tight and close battle in the Supernational’s.
In the Swift Sport Championship, both Lydden and Valkenswaard have proved that the action is non-stop, and the racing very close, and it will be a case of more of the same please at Knockhill. Tristan Ovenden, Rob Maynard, Graham Rodemark, Chris Mullen, Jack Brown and Mark Dodsworth have all entered, and it really is in the case with the Swifts of, take your pick. You could reason a good argument here for any one individual, but the competition is so close, with good drivers, that it really could be any one of six.
The BMW Mini will see the Hudson brothers Keifer and Kris join the fray for the first time this year, and they are welcome back too. They will join David Bell and Rebecca Ryder to contest the category over the weekend, and like the Swifts, it could be very close competition all weekend.
The Hot Hatch sees leader Craig Lomax make the long trip to Knockhill, where he will be aiming to extend his lead in the category. Lomax has won in Holland and Lydden in the Saxo, and will be favourite to keep his lead. That said Tomasz Weilgosz in the Peugeot 106, will push him hard, the pair enjoying some great battles over the opening two rounds. Stephan Gaunt, David Ellis and Tomasz Marciniak, who are all Citroën Saxo mounted, will aim to make sure the others do not have it all their own way.
Marc Scott will make the shortest trip for him this year, from his base in Dumfries to Knockhill, where battle with James Grint will resume in the RX150’s. With the way this pair have battled each other over the two rounds at Lydden and Valkenswaard, the ten point lead that Scott has is not that much. Grint has taken the fight to Scott this year, and from the sidelines it has been a great spectacle to watch. Kevin Feeney holds third in the standings and will be at Knockhill to push them all the way, as will Larry and Adam Sargent. Richard Moore will aim to push his RX150 into the middle of the activity, so once again the prospect for some great action in the RX150’s remains high.
The MSA Juniors will see Suzuki Swifts in the hands of Charlie Bean, Drew Bellerby, Jake Taylor and Jennie Hawkes. Lydden saw a great battle between Bean and Bellerby, and there is no reason why it will not be the same at Knockhill, but do not rule out Taylor or Hawkes.
The Super 1600 will see Ashley Walton, Jack Thorne and Phil Chicken all line up in Citroën C2’s, but Chicken has a healthy lead already following his points scoring trip to Holland. Thorne though showed at Lydden the he certainly has the speed and could well push Chicken for the victory.
Retro Rallycross returns to Knockhill, after a very successful outing at last years Knockhill event. Sadly engine issues seem as though it has kept out Rob Gibson in the MG Metro 6R4, but the good news is that James Harrold will bring the VW Beetle out for the weekend. Harrold suffered what can only be called a gearbox explosion while testing some weeks ago, and has worked hard to have the car repaired, so he for one, will be delighted to be back out on track at Knockhill. He will be joined by the glorious sounding BDA Escort of Ray Morgan, along with Lance Foster and Ian Biagi in Mini’s, while Dave Black in the Astra GTE and Paul Smith in the Polo will also be on hand to entertain. Bill Watson has an interesting entry in an RS200, and it will make a great addition to the ever growing and successful Retro Rallycross.
Please note that our TV partners AMGTV will be screening the Knockhill round live on the Sunday, via the Livestream channel.
