Lynch targets points return at Pembrey
Wigan racer Tony Lynch has his sights set on a return to the points this weekend when the 2015 MSA British Rallycross Championship in association with the Shannon Group heads to Wales for the third round of the year.
Westhoughton-based Tony makes the long trip to Pembrey seeking to rebound from a rare retirement last time out at Lydden Hill, where a split wheel rim forced him to abandon the Super National Class final.
With his Lucas Oil Team Geriatric MINI Cooper S having been fully repaired in recent weeks, Tony will now hope for an upturn in fortunes as the team looks to introduce the latest phase of its long-term development programme with the car.
Having already introduced revised AVO suspension this season, Tony will now hope to benefit from the switch to a new close ratio gearbox, which is being fitted to the car in time for this weekend’s event.
It means that, despite still lacking power compared to many of his rivals, Tony should still be right in the mix for a place in the final – with the superior handling capabilities of the MINI leaving him confident about his chances.
“We know we face a tall order again this weekend as Pembrey is a very quick circuit, but with the new gearbox fitted to the car, we should be able to take a step forward in performance,” he said. “After the disappointment of Lydden Hill, I’m hoping we’ll be able to return to the kind of form we showed at Croft in the opening round – where we qualified straight into the A Final and picked up some solid points.
“Power is the one thing we are still lacking and there is no doubt that that will play a part at Pembrey through the final corner and across the start/finish straight. However, we do have a car that handles brilliantly and with the addition of the new gearbox, hopefully that will compensate for anything we lose in a straight line.
“While we don’t expect to be in a position to fight for victory this weekend against what should be a particularly strong field, I’m confident that we can pick up some decent points to add to our tally.”
