Mardenborough joins RX150 field for Pembrey
The sixth round of the MSA British Rallycross Championship in association with the Shannon Group takes place at Pembrey, South Wales this weekend, where GT Academy winner Jann Mardenborough will join the RX150 grid.
Cardiff-based Mardenborough will take time out of his busy motorsport schedule to race at his home circuit in the RX150 category, before the next round of the GP3 series in Hungary.
Mardenborough drove the Jelf-Insurance backed RX150 buggy for the first time at a bespoke test track on Tuesday. “Rallycross is something new for me and I’m just looking to have some fun, I’ve got a weekend off before the next round of GP3. Pembrey is my home track and rallycross is on, so to try it for the first time will be nice. I like trying different types of motorsports - rallycross looks really exciting to do,” said Mardenborough, who raced at the famous Le Mans 24-hour race for Nissan in June.
“The ride height of the buggy is a lot higher than a normal single-seater, with a lot more suspension travel. It’s going to be unusual to have a lot more movement in the car and to be going sideways. It will be something new for me to be racing people on gravel too. Judging from what I’ve seen as a spectator it looks pretty exciting, so hopefully from the drivers seat it will be even more so. I hope it’s a nice wet weekend because it would be pretty cool to race with the mud flying around and getting really stuck into it,” he continued.
The deal for Mardenborough to compete at Pembrey was put together by circuit manager, Phil Davies. “Jann drives for Carlin Motorsport and we’ve been friendly with Trevor Carlin for about 25 years, they test at Pembrey quite often. I thought it would be good to have someone like Jann in the car - he’s a Cardiff based racing driver on the international scene and he has been here quite a bit, so it tied up nicely. It’s good for the circuit and for British Rallycross,” he explained.
With three rounds of the 2015 RX150 championship remaining, former circuit-racer Chrissy Palmer and double champion Marc Scott are currently tied on points at the top of the standings. Championship co-ordinator Ollie O’Donovan is looking forward to the weekend’s proceedings. “The fight between Chrissy and Marc is great. It shows how close the buggies are and how close they both are as drivers. It’s a pleasure to welcome Jann to the RX150s too. He is very, very good. He was straight up to speed at the test - very neat and tidy. I think he has a good chance of being on the podium this weekend,” said O’Donovan.
Action at Pembrey gets underway at 0900 on Sunday 19th July, while those unable to attend the event can watch the action unfold on livestream.
