New York-based Irishman Donoghue set for 5 Nations BRX effort
New York-based rally and rallycross driver Gary Donoghue has confirmed his plans for 2024, which include an effort in more than half of the Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy season.
Donoghue has been a regular in North American rally events in recent years and is most renowned for competing in Mitsubishi Lancers, in which he won events, before switching to a Ford Fiesta Proto.
Last year, Donoghue made a switch to rallycross in his homeland, racing a Ford Fiesta Supercar in the Irish Rallycross Championship, including in joint events with 5 Nations BRX at Pembrey and Mondello Park in a campaign of selected rounds. He scored a best finish of second in the seventh round of the series at Mondello Park.
Donoghue will compete in the first and third weekends of the 5 Nations BRX season at Lydden Hill, and in the Irish round of the championship at Mondello Park. He becomes the third Irish Championship regular to commit to racing Ford Fiesta Supercar in 5 Nations BRX for 2024, joining John McCluskey and Michael Donoghue.
5 Nations BRX runs across 10 rounds in 2024 with events at Lydden Hill, Mondello Park (Ireland) and Pembrey (South Wales). The opening two rounds take place at Lydden Hill on Easter Bank Holiday Weekend (Mar 30 - April 1).
Gary Donoghue:
“Last year was my first experience in a Supercar, it’s been a lot of learning but definitely unbelievable fun. Easter will be my first time racing at Lydden Hill so I’m really looking forward to going there. The Fiesta has been fully rebuilt over the winter and hopefully we can get up to speed quickly. Mondello will be special - racing in a big event on home turf – that will be a great weekend and hopefully the Irish contingent can lock out the podium. The Lydden Legend Festival also looks like its going to be a huge event so I’m excited to be planning to be part of that too.”
