O’Donovan targets final Focus win at Lydden Hill
Former British champion Ollie O’Donovan enters the second round of the MSA British Rallycross Championship in association with the Shannon Group at Lydden Hill this weekend aiming to give his Yokohama backed Team RX Racing Ford Focus Supercar a send off victory.
O’Donovan finished second at the first round of the season at Croft earlier this month, and lies second in the championship standings. O’Donovan’s Ford Focus is due to be replaced by a brand new Tony Bardy Motorsport prepared Fiesta, but with the first round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship just a month away, O’Donovan will race the Focus this weekend so the Fiesta can be fully prepared for the rest of the season. The new car will be run in the all of the remaining European and British Championship events.
“We are using the Focus this weekend, then we’ll debut the Fiesta at the European Championship event in Belgium. I want to give the Focus one last win before we swap to the new car. It deserves it. I think we have a good chance this weekend at Lydden,” said the London-based Irishman, who won the last British Championship event to be held at Lydden Hill, last August. “We’re ready and will be pushing hard for another strong result. I really want to win a second British Championship and we need to keep pushing because the Supercar class is really strong this season.”
Together with tyre partner Yokohama, O’Donovan continued the development of Yokohama’s rallycross rubber at Croft, and will be introducing another new tyre compound this weekend at Lydden Hill. “We ran four different types of tyre at Lydden, from which we have brought two forward to this event. We’re also going to have another new tyre at Lydden to try. I have to say, I’m really pleased with the performance of the tyres, and it’s great that Yokohama are so committed to developing a winning tyre in rallycross.”
Also racing under the Team RX Racing banner at Lydden Hill will be Mitsubishi Evo X driver, Steve Hill. The former rally man was thwarted by transmission troubles at Croft, but finished second to multiple British Champion in the B final and will be hoping to make it into the A final at this weekend. Geoffrey Dolan made his rallycross debut at Croft but will miss Lydden Hill this weekend. He’ll return to Team RX Racing for round three at Pembrey in May in his Opel Astra.
