O’Donovan to begin busy International rallycross schedule at Pembrey
British rallycross front-runner Ollie O’Donovan begins a busy schedule of three race weekends on the bounce this weekend, starting at the third round of the MSA British Rallycross Championship in association with the Shannon Group at Pembrey.
Team RX Racing driver O’Donovan currently sits third in the British Championship standings, behind Andy Scott and Julian Godfrey, and will race his Ford Focus Supercar at the Welsh event as he tries to secure his first victory of the season and challenge for the championship lead.
The Yokohama backed Irishman has elected to use his Ford Focus and save his brand new Tony Bardy Motorsport prepared Ford Fiesta Supercar for the first round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship at Mettet in Belgium, just a week after Pembrey, and then the week following Belgium, O’Donovan will compete in his ‘home’ round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship at Lydden Hill.
“We have a really busy few weeks ahead, so we’ve decided to use the Focus at Pembrey, so as not put too much strain on the Fiesta by the time we get to Lydden for the World RX event. I really like Pembrey, I had one of my first proper rallycross race there in the old Peugeot 306, and it’s a track that really suits me,” said the London-based Irishman. “We made some good steps forward with the development of the Yokohama rallycross tyre at Croft and Lydden, I really want to repay their commitment to our programme by getting a good result at Pembrey.”
O’Donovan will contest the five-round FIA European Rallycross Championship this season, using the new Fiesta which he will test in the lead up to the Belgian event next week. “We will do some running in the Fiesta before Belgium to ensure we are ready. I’m excited to be racing in both the British and European championships this season against some fantastic competition,” he continued.
Also racing under the Team RX Racing banner at Pembrey will be Mitsubishi Evo X driver, Steve Hill, hoping to fight back from transmission problems at round one and engine failure in the early stages of round two.
Action at Pembrey gets underway at 0900 on Sunday 10th May, while those unable to attend the event can watch the action unfold on livestream.
