O’Donovans wins Croft, Supernational title for Emery
Ollie O’Donovan started from pole for the final of the MSA Supercar in association with Odyssey Batteries and led from start to finish to win the final round of the 2014 MSA British Rallycross Championship in association with the Shannon Group in his Tony Bardy prepared Ford Focus..
On a dry cool day at the popular North Yorkshire circuit, he headed home the newly crowned British Champion, Julian Godfrey in his Ford Fiesta. A popular third was local driver Kevin Procter in his newly built Ford Fiesta. Mark Flaherty brought the LD Motorsport prepared Citroën DS3 into fourth with Steve Hill rounding out the top five in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo.
In the MSA Supernationals, the 2014 British title went to Stuart Emery, but it was not as easy for the popular Kent man as it seemed. The misfire that affected the car at Lydden appeared today at Croft and his team worked hard to cure it. With a severely down on power Peugeot 206 he started the first two heats, albeit running poorly. When Gary Simpson was unable to secure the points for fastest times, Emery knew the title was his. He said “Its been a very tough day today, but I am really pleased that we have taken the title. It is so good for the team after all the hard work they have put in, but also for UK Battery Sales, who have been my partners all year and backed us in all we do.” In the final, Dave Bellerby took his Sayers Lotus Exige to a dominant win the dry conditions suiting the car very well. Gary Simpson brought his BMW E30 into second place and the runner up spot, with Guy Corner in the Peugeot 206GTi taking the final podium place in third. Jef Mertens was fourth in the Opel Corsa, while B Final winner Mike Howlin took fifth.
In the MSA Juniors, Charlie Bean was on pole, and took an early lead, battling with Jake Taylor. The pair extended the lead over Bellerby and it was odds on that Bean was set for victory when surprisingly on the last lap Bean and Taylor had a coming together, that allowed Bellerby through to take victory on the last half lap. It was a good final, and a fitting one after all the entertainment the Juniors have provided all year.
Thee Swift Sport Championship provided some great heats all day, and Tristan Ovenden was on pole courtesy of two fastest heat times. Alongside he had Chris Mullen for company, while the outside of the front row was taken up by Graham Rodemark. Darren Scott and Jack Brown filled the middle row, while Emmerdale star Kelvin Fletcher and Rob Maynard were on Row three. Ovenden made the better start, with Mullen settling into a battle with Rodemark, who then got the better better of Mullen and moved into second. Ovenden took the win, with Rodemark second and Mullen third. Brown was fourth with Scott fifth. The Swift results though remain provisional.
In the BMW Mini’s, after a restart it was Kris Hudson that took the win with David Bell second and John Clayton third. Joe Cunningham won the Hot Hatch.
A rare mistake from Marc Scott in an early heat meant that he was not on pole for the final, but rather Kevin Feeney, who had driven very well throughout the day. Scott was alongside with Jake Harris on the outside of the front row. Chrissy Palmer and Stephen Jones made up the second row, while James Grint, Adam Sargent and Tom O’Rourke completed the third row. Scott made a superb start and went on his way, to lead and take the win, while Chrissy Palmer made everyone sit up and take notice with a very good second in the final. Third was Feeney, while James Grint and Jake Harris had been featuring well, before tangling, and losing time.
The Super1600 was a Jack Thorne affair, with three fastest heat times, pole and a victory to round off a very good day for the Citroën C2 driver. Craig Lomax finished second in the Citroën Saxo, running Super1600 for the first time. Third went to Phil Chicken in another Citroën C2.
Tomorrow sees Croft host the MSA British Rallycross Grand Prix.
