Ovenden and Godfrey join forces for 5 Nations BRX Teams’ title challenge
Experienced Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy contenders Julian Godfrey and Tristan Ovenden will team up for the 2025 campaign with a pair of Citroen DS3 Supercars.
Renowned engineer Godfrey is one of the most successful drivers ever to compete in the British Rallycross Championship, with a joint-record six titles to his name and 23 event victories. He switched to an LD Motorsport Citroen DS3 for the 2023 campaign and remains both a victory and title contender.
Like Godfrey, Ovenden is a champion through the 5 Nations BRX ladder. While Godfrey won Stock Hatch class crowns before stepping up to win in the Supernational division, it was in the Swift Sport Championship that Ovenden claimed a brace of titles, before securing three straight Supernational crowns.
Ovenden stepped up to the Supercar division during the 2019 campaign, and has since won rounds of 5 Nations BRX, notably his maiden victory coming at Mondello Park in 2022.
The pair have been linked through Godfrey being Ovenden’s engine builder since his Supercar bow, and the pair will now operate more closely as part of their yet-to-be-named team for the Supercar Teams’ title-race, while continuing to challenge as individuals for the Drivers’ crown.
Julian Godfrey
“I have worked on the car over the winter to improve the reliability we’ve had in the last couple of years. I’ve changed suspension springs and differential settings, but also sorted a few problems that were following us last year. I discovered a problem with the brakes where the handbrake was being held on at the starts, especially as the car got hot later in the day or in a restart, so obviously I hope the starts will be an improvement this season. I’m getting more used to having to throw the DS3 around, and using the handbrake to be more aggressive into the corners. It has taken me time to get used to having no centre diff but I am really looking forward to the season, and working together with Tristan and his team in the Teams’ Championship.”
Tristan Ovenden:
“This move makes a lot of sense for us. We have had a close working relationship with Julian for a few years now, and he has helped us several times on events as part of that. The plan is for us to operate even more closely this year, to help each other within the team and to score as many points as possible. On our side, we certainly don’t have the most up-to-date car on the grid, but we are finding small steps all the time, and the key to the team’s championship this year I think will be consistency, which we have proved we have in the last few seasons. We’re still working on a commercial partner to headline the team name, and we will have more news ahead of the season. Our local rounds at Lydden to start the year can’t come soon enough.”
