Pembrey Circuit beckons for penultimate 5 Nations BRX 2024 instalment
The Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy travels to Pembrey Circuit in South Wales this weekend for the penultimate instalment of the 2024 campaign (October 5-6).
Over 12 months on from British Rallycross’ last visit to ‘The Home of Welsh Motorsport’, the circuit will once again be run in an opposite direction on both days to give drivers and spectators variety, while the changes made to the first corner for the anti-clockwise layout last year remain for 2024.
On the back of claiming the FIA European Rallycross Championship title in Portugal last month, reigning and double British Rallycross Champion Patrick O’Donovan leads the Supercar standings heading into the final phase of the 5 Nations BRX season.
But, not only does O’Donovan hold a strong advantage in the 5 Nations BRX Supercar standings, he has only been beaten once in the six rounds of the season so far. That was in the opening round of the campaign at Lydden Hill, where his father, Ollie O’Donovan secured a first win in six years.
Behind the O’Donovan pair in the standings, John McCluskey has made a full-time return to 5 Nations BRX for 2024 and impressed, he sits just four points behind second in the championship table with his Murray Motorsport-run Ford Fiesta, with experienced Mitsubishi Evo racer Steve Hill tied on points for fourth overall with six-time champion Julian Godfrey, both drivers having made a single podium appearance so far this season.
Also visiting the rostrum on one occasion so far, Citroen DS3 racer Tristan Ovenden turned a difficult year around last time out at Lydden Hill with a third-place finish.
Of the drivers also competing at Pembrey this weekend, Colin Anson has had his strongest-ever Supercar season to date with his Spencer Sport-built Mitsubishi Mirage while Irish newcomer to rallycross, Ian Barrett, has yet to realise his potential in his ex-Kristoffersson Motorsport Volkswagen Polo but could be a contender this weekend.
In the Motorsport UK Supernational Rallycross Championship, former champion Jason Bleasdale has won all but one round and leads the standings overall and in the rear-wheel-drive sub-category, while Ford Fiesta campaigner Fred Ling heads the front-wheel-drive division.
Reigning title-winner Tyler McAlpin tops the Motorsport UK Junior Rallycross Championship order for single-make 1300cc Suzuki Swifts, but Tighe Wratten and Benjamin Bartlett have both claimed victories this season in the closely-fought category.
Former Junior RX title-contender Will Ovenden heads the Swift Sport Rallycross Championship table, while Andrew Sage claimed a maiden victory last time out. Returning to the Swift category this weekend will be Daryl Chaffey, while Helen Stewart and Amanda Price will make their rallycross debuts.
Three drivers have been victorious so-far in the BMW Mini Rallycross Championship, but it’s three-time winner Wesley Wickens that tops the single-make standings ahead of fellow winners Abbie McGuinness and Leigh-Anne Sedgwick.
Retro Rallycross newcomer Charlie French heads the Super Retro Rallycross Championship standings in his maiden campaign, leading four-time British Rallycross Champion Pat Doran in the points, Doran claiming a maiden Retro RX win at Mondello Park with his Ford Escort back in May. Another Ford Fiesta runner, Dan Swayland, heads the Retro Rallycross Championship points for cars up to 1600cc, but Swayland is yet to win this year, Terry Moore (Mini Clubman), Ian Biagi (Mini Clubman) and Tony Lynch (Toyota MR2) having stood on the top step of the podium in the class so far.
Former champion Stephen Jones leads the single-make buggy RX150 Rallycross Championship category, for 2024 the class racing on track together with the new Cross Car Rallycross Championship, in which former Swift Sport champion Max Weatherley leads the order, although it was Richard Rees who claimed victory last time out at Lydden Hill.
