Pembrey Swiftsport round up
Tristan Ovenden
Championship leader headed to Pembrey in confident mood, ahead of the third round of this years championship. In his first heat Ovenden started on the second row of the grid and managed to finish second fastest overall. Heat Two’s grid draw was from a row further back which left Ovenden a lot of work to do, but even so he managed to secure third overall in what proved to be a tough heat.
The third heat saw him draw pole position an opportunity, which he didn’t pass up, and put in the fastest time securing a front row start for the all-important A-Final.
The start of the A-final was characteristically action packed and after a red flag and restart the race got underway. After contact with another car Ovenden managed to get round the tricky first right hander, albeit minus the front wing of his Swift. Ovenden then lead the final from lights to flag putting in a flawless performance.
At the finish he said “We had a tough first 2 heats and needed to find a bit more time in heat 3, which after some excellent work by the team, we did find to qualify second. The restart of the final was very close at the first corner with some contact, but once I was on my way I put in good consistent laps to win. It's a great result for all the team as they worked really hard this weekend.”
Jake Taylor
Having secured solid championship points in the first two rounds of this years MSA British Rallycross Championship in association with the Shannon Group.Jake Taylor was keen to improve on previous results at a circuit he has raced previously as a junior.
He ended up placed 10th overall after the three challenging heats which put him on the front row for the B-Final. He ran a near perfect race, in fact recording his fastest overall time of the day, to win a place in the A-Final for the second successive round.
Taylor finished the Swift final in a solid fifth place after a hard fought and restarted A final. No mean feat considering he started from the back of the grid! Taylor now stands in fifth place in the championship after the opening three rounds
Taylor said "It’s been an amazing day of Rallycross all round, the track was changing with every heat so I learnt to adapt throughout the day. After the tough first heats, tweaks to the car and reviewing my in-car video footage with Autopoint helped outline where I could improve, which I did. I am incredibly happy with winning the B-Final, with another clean run and my fastest time of the day. None of this would have been possible without the help of my primary sponsor Wallrock, thank you guys"
Nathan Heathcote
18 year old Nathan Heathcote made his first visit of the year to Pembrey Race Circuit for round 3 of the Swift Rallycross Championship. The Pluckley driver was hoping to build on the solid start to his 2015 season after a podium finish at Croft for and scoring solid championship points at his home round at Lydden Hill.
During the days three heats Heathcote gradually settled in and qualified 5th fastest overall which secured him a place on the second row for the final just behind the current champion Tristan Ovenden.
Heathcote made a great start and edged between the two cars in front of him, unfortunately he clipped one of them which sent him up into the air (other drivers reported seeing the underside of Heathcotes car pass them!) this, unfortunately for Heathcote, resulted in a red flag which would also signal the end of racing for him on the day. He said "I started the day with good pace and kept on improving. I had high hopes of a podium finish but unfortunately a mistake at the start of the final ended my day prematurely. But that’s Rallycross I suppose. Lessons learnt and hopefully I can do better next time."
Alex Spencer
Rookie driver Alex Spencer headed to Pembrey in South Wales and the third round of this year’s Swift Rallycross Championship, looking to build on the experience he has already acquired this year.
The racing was tough as the thirteen strong entries all battled hard in the difficult and dusty conditions. Spencer and the team decided that they would try out some new set-ups on the car, which were mainly suspension changes. Unfortunately coupled with the fact that it was a new circuit for them this didn’t help the round run smoothly for them.
Alex qualified for the second row of the B – Final but left himself too much work to do to progress into the A-Final this time around. He added “For us itwas a tough day at a new circuit, we tried some new things with the set up that didn't work out for us but we went away with a lot learnt and some valuable experience! We will now put what we have leant into practice and move forward to the next round and another new circuit, this time at Mondello”
Aidan Hills
Worthing based Swift Rallycross Championship contender Aidan Hills Headed to Round 3 held at Pembrey in South Wales with one goal in mind and that was to come away with maximum championship points.
In the first heat he started out exactly to plan beginning from the front row of the grid and coming away with the fastest heat time of the day at that point. The second heat concluded with a similar result putting Hills in a commanding position and hopeful of securing the coveted pole position for the A-Final. He was only beaten into second place in the third heat by reigning championship Tristan Ovenden. This was enough to gain him pole position for the A-Final.
After a red flag incident at the first corner the A-Final was restarted and in the rush to the first corner Hills found himself spun around after racing contact placing him in last place. Hills then showed racing maturity and level headedness and managed to claw back a place earning him 6th place overall proving that he has the ability to run at the top.
At the finish he said “I’m just really disappointed with the outcome after such a promising start to the day, especially as it was the first time I'd been at Pembrey. Putting the car on pole for the A-Final with 3 heat wins, I definitely had the pace to win the meeting, but then that's racing, a bit of contact at the wrong time turned me around and ended my weekend. I'll be fighting harder than ever for a win at the next race. We still have a lot of time to find in the new car considering that it was only the second time I've been in it.”
