Return to Rallycross for Flaherty
After a twenty-year lay off from the sport, former Lydden Hill Rallycross Champion Mark Flaherty will make his return to the sport this weekend at Lydden when he will compete in Pat Doran’s LD Motorsport prepared Citroën DS3 Supercar in Round Five of the 2014 MSA British Rallycross Championship in association with the Shannon Group.
His son Mitchell will join him at Lydden, 21 and will race a Suzuki Swift on his Rallycross debut.
Flaherty won the Lydden Hill Championship in his familiar blue MG Metro 6R4, but moved away from the sport when in 1993 Group B cars were no longer eligible for European competition.
He admits that this weekend will be for now a one-off, he does not rule out appearing again this year, and is keen to make a full time return to the sport and said “I am sure that once I have driven the car, I will want to do Croft but we will see how it goes. The first thing I’ve got to learn is the launch control. I’m not sure if I like the idea of it or not, I was always good off the line.”
A regular on the British Rallycross scene for many years, Flaherty has made the odd competition appearance over the years, most notably in the Porsche Carrera Cup in 2012 which he described as “My first time circuit racing, but the budgets for that are mad, and Rallycross is much more achievable and possible to do, especially with its recent resurgence again.”
