Rooke targets British SuperNational rallycross title at season finale
Rising rallycross star Dan Rooke embarks on the final round of the MSA British Rallycross Championship this weekend at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire [October 10] aiming to seal the SuperNational category title in his inaugural season in the sport.
Rooke has led the points table since the second round of the series at Lydden Hill in April, where he claimed his first British Championship victory. Driving the Dan Rooke Racing prepared Citroen AX, Rooke has consistently delivered strong performances throughout the season, scoring four podiums from seven events to date, and won for a second time at the penultimate round at Lydden Hill in August.
With a 15 point margin to the second placed driver in the SuperNational points, Rooke is well aware that a strong points haul is important at Croft on Saturday. “The championship has been in the back of my mind since we returned from Mondello Park [in June], but I know I need to stay focused and treat it no differently to any other race. I know that the championship is now within touching distance but it can still be taken away, so I need to make sure I score good points,” explained the 18-year old. “It would be amazing to be able to finish the year with victory at the final round, so I will push for the win but only where it is sensible to do so. If it doesn't look possible I won’t risk everything, I’ll do what I need to do for the points.”
The Devonian driver has undergone intense preparation for the season finale, and plans to implement skills learnt by being part of the illustrious MSA Academy. “I've been watching the footage from the last time we were at Croft and pin-pointed where I can find more time, so I can try a new approach to that part of the track and hopefully gain a bit more pace overall. I've also been working on my fitness and trying to get in the gym whenever I can. The last time I was with the MSA we looked at the psychology behind racing and ways to get yourself warmed up for a race. We also looked how to get the best out of your tyres and how to adapt your driving to fit the grip levels. Hopefully that will all help this weekend.”
Rooke will also compete in the MSA British Rallycross Grand Prix on Sunday [October 11], a prestigious event where all cars are run together in a single category, allowing two-wheel drive front-runners like Rooke to take on the might of the headline making Supercars. “I'm looking forward to seeing how I get on against all the other classes and seeing if I am able to keep up with the Supercars,” concluded the young driver.
The MSA British Rallycross Championship is aired live on Livestream and broadcast following the event on British Eurosport. Find out full details, along with a full entry list to the Croft event, on the MSA British Rallycross Championship website, here.
