Taylor wants company in August at Lydden Hill
Rallycross is on a high just now; of that there is no doubt. Whether it is the FIA World Rallycross or the domestic British Championship, the sport itself, and the public awareness of it, is increasing hugely.
Youth plays a major part in that aspect, both for the long-term success and its survival. Jake Taylor who along with the likes of Drew Bellerby, Jennie Hawkes, Bradley Durdin and more recently Charlie Bean are now showing that the sport transcends age.
British Rallycross caught up with Taylor recently to put a few questions to him on his thoughts on the sport.
Why do you like Rallycross
“I love Rallycross, the buzz of the racing and the intense close action make it what it is. I have always had a passion for Rally Driving and Motorsport in general and Rallycross combines the two perfectly and once I tried it I was totally hooked.
Starting off as a junior in rally driving I decided to move over to Rallycross in 2013 where driver ability can really show through. It was also clearly the biggest up and coming Motorsport discipline with excellent coverage, exposure and future potential. For a young driver like me is an obvious choice to take.”
How he has found the first two rounds of is year’s series in terms of competitiveness
“Stepping up to the Swift Sport Senior class was always the plan, which only really become reality thanks to some great support from Wallrock, Createinn, Steel Seal and JB Weld. We worked hard at a marketing plan and we seem to have a great formula that is working well so far, and that we are all happy with. This year it's faster, incredibly competitive and has very, very close racing action; I love being part of it.
Don’t get me wrong, it's been a big learning curve for me and different to the juniors with more cars out there at higher speeds, so concentration and reactions have to be quicker. It's great to be out there racing with the best in the UK. To be really honest, so far we are really pleased with my progress as this year was all about learning and improving my race craft. Being 6th overall so far on the championship out of 16 drivers is far better than I imagined, all thanks to everyone who has supported me so far.”
How helpful has Graham at Autopoint who prepare the car been
Graham and Kieran at Autopoint have been fantastic I must say that, they really have. Working with these guys has been a real eye opener for me and from them I am learning all the time, and when you learn, you become better. Their support and first hand experience of UK, European and World RX is the best in the UK. That makes a huge difference for my progress and confidence in what I am trying to achieve on race day.
They're brilliant with immediate trackside support and advice so I can learn as I race and it's great to know I have the best engineering support there is in Rallycross looking after me.
Sure there is more to learn and we are all looking forward to the rest of 2015 with Autopoint, it's a great team and we have a laugh along the way.”
What are Jakes aims for his future in RX
“I aim to be proof that you don't need great wealth or come from a Motorsport family to do well in the sport, just have determination, great support and a strong plan and I want to show it is accessible to others and that it's the best form of Motorsport there is.
One other thing though I really do aspire to become an ambassador for the sport, train others and reach the top. My tag line says it all: #thefutureisRX
So the idea behind the competition is
“I am new to the sport, and young. Social Media now is the way to promote and advertise almost anything at all. We want to reach out to our generation as well as new fans and make them aware of the sport of Rallycross, so we came up with the idea of taking someone for a ride in the car at the Lydden Hill round of this years Championship. It is not until August, but this allows us to work at making fans aware that they can simply enter and be in with a chance to win. This is our way of marketing youth, speed, motorsport and fun all at the same time.”
