Third in the herd for Mullen at Pembrey
After a long winded break from the victorious round at Knockhill, Chris and the team set off on their travels to Pembrey, Wales leaving the glorious sunshine in Leeds, West Yorkshire to contest round 4 of the MSA British Rallycross Championship in association with the Shannon Group.
Taking a new mechanic to join team Mullen Motorsport, James Darley joined for the 6 hour journey they had ahead of them.
Arriving on Saturday evening the boys set up camp to be later joined by the likes of Darren Scott and Jack Brown. BBQ going and beers flowing nicely the team and other Suzuki Swift Rallycross contenders showed true sportsmanship by all sitting together on the eve of round four of the British Rallycross Championship.
The morning of the race day brought Chris a rusty start with having such a long break from the last round. The practice saw the born racer have a very dusty outing where a few changes were made to the rear shocker that had been replaced before the weekend.
Final preparations done Chris found himself already sat on the start line amongst some other great drivers. Starting at the back of the grid in the first heat Chris reached second place by the second corner to then chase Graham Rodemark’s tail for the rest of the race. Progressing so quickly off the grid and finishing in second place Chris finished with the 4th fastest time in the heat.
The second heat saw Chris have a front row starting position. Having a fantastic start and being first into the corner, Chris took a nudge from Darren Scott which sent him wide allowing Darren and Graham to pass. Managing to get his speed back up Chris whizzed past Darren in turn three which led him to once again be tight on Graham’s tail past the finish line. The incident that happened in the first corner led Chris to again finish fourth fastest in the heat.
The third heat became an interesting one where Chris battled hard with Graham and Tristan. With the trio swapping and changing positions all through the race Chris pulled out a third with only tenths of a second between all three contenders.
Qualifying for position three on the grid for the final, Chris made the last preparations to the car for it to be ready to go out and battle once more.
Starting the final with an excellent start Chris was disrupted by a collision between Graham and Tristan that he unfortunately got caught up in. Managing to concentrate on his own race Chris pulled away from Tristan in turn two where he remained in second place for three laps. An incident where the car exited the loose section left space for Tristan to come through and steal second place leaving Chris with a third place finish for the weekend.
"I'm happy with the result from the weekend, it's always nice to come away with a podium finish especially after the moment we had coming off the loose in the final, it could have so easily of been a disaster leaving us with a few if any points. We seem to have struggled slightly this weekend but hopefully have learnt from this as we were quicker in the final. It's time to move on and look forward to Lydden hill on the august bank holiday.
